John McDougall – An American Roller hen

The Roller has a long and storied past. In fact Rollers have been in North America since the early 1800s and possibly longer. In those early years the birds were bred for long flights and deep, fast rolls.

William Pensom forever changed the hobby. First, while living in England he collected as many of the best birds from the different families in the region that he could buy. Then he began to export birds from his collection as well as other individuals. This resulted in a very different roller coming to North America. Soon Pensom immigrated to America and along with that came a different methodology of flying. This “new method” of flying Birmingham Rollers is still in use today.

We do not want to lose our heritage, and to help organize the information we have put together these few pages.
