Worming Rollers

Quest Gel (containing 2% moxidectin) is the primary equine dewormer used off-label for pigeons. Pigeon fanciers commonly mix four plunger notches or clicks of the horse gel into a cup of warm water, blend it thoroughly, and add it to one gallon of drinking water for a 24-hour treatment cycle. [1, 2, 3]

How to Use Equine Moxidectin for Pigeons

  • Active Ingredient: Moxidectin 2.0% (found in standard Quest Gel or Quest Plus Gel which includes praziquantel for tapeworms). [1, 2, 3]
  • Flock Mixing Ratio: Blend 4 notches (clicks) of the syringe plunger into 1 cup of warm water for 30 seconds, then stir that mixture into 1 gallon of fresh drinking water. [1]
  • Duration: Provide the medicated water as the only drinking source for 24 to 48 hours. [1, 2]
  • Repeat Schedule: Repeat the 1-day treatment again after 9 to 21 days depending on the parasite life cycle, and clean the loft thoroughly after treatment to prevent reinfection from paralyzed worms in the droppings. [1, 2]

Important Safety Precautions

  • Precise Measurement: Moxidectin is extremely potent. Overdosing small birds relative to a horse dosage can cause toxicity or neurological distress. Always measure carefully based on gallon ratios. [1, 2, 3]
  • Loft Sanitation: Moxidectin paralyzes rather than instantly dissolves intestinal worms like roundworms; birds will pass them in their droppings, meaning the loft floor must be cleaned immediately so birds do not ingest expelled eggs. []
  • Avian Alternatives: Whenever possible, use specifically formulated avian products like Vetafarm Wormout Gel or MoxiVet Plus to ensure exact, species-safe dosing.
