About NBRC

The National Birmingham Roller Club (NBRC) is a premier organization dedicated to the breeding, training, and flying of Birmingham Roller pigeons—a breed specializing in tumbling backward in flight. Based in the USA, it promotes competition, fellowship, and education regarding the breed, hosting the National Championship Fly (NCF).

Key Aspects of the NBRC:
  • Mission: To cultivate the “true” Birmingham Roller and organize flying competitions.
  • National Championship Fly (NCF): The premier event, started in 1996, featuring both 11-bird and 20-bird competitions.
  • Structure: The club divides the country into regions, each with a Director who manages local qualification flights.
  • Membership: Open to any person interested in the breed; members receive the “NBRC Bulletin,” a publication filled with information on the hobby.
  • Activities: Along with competition, the club holds annual conventions that include loft visits and education, often focusing on mentorship.

Rules and Guidelines
  • Competition Rules: Competitors must be current members and can fly in their respective regions. Regional directors must receive entry fees for the NCF, which features both old and young bird categories, although the latter is often emphasized, according to.
  • Remote Location Policy: Members can fly from a “remote location” within their region, provided they follow strict supervision rules (e.g., attending in person, bringing a judge).
  • Getting Started: The club emphasizes learning from others, allowing for mistakes, and participating in local competitions to learn how to prepare a “kit” (a group of pigeons).

  • The Roller has a long and storied past. In fact Rollers have been in North America since the early 1800s and possibly longer. In those early years the birds were bred for long flights and deep, fast rolls.

William Pensom forever changed the hobby. First, while living in England he collected as many of the best birds from the different families in the region that he could buy. Then he began to export birds from his collection as well as other individuals. This resulted in a very different roller coming to North America. Soon Pensom immigrated to America and along with that came a different methodology of flying. This “new method” of flying Birmingham Rollers is still in use today.

We do not want to lose our heritage, and to help organize the information we have put together these few pages.
