Lost & Found Birds

Secure and Contain

If the pigeon is grounded, injured, or seems tame, it likely needs help.

  1. Approach gently: Drape a light towel or t-shirt over the bird and carefully scoop it up.
  2. Contain it: Place the bird in a cardboard box, pet carrier, or unwaxed paper bag. Ensure the container has small air holes for ventilation.
  3. Keep it calm: Place the box in a warm, dark, and quiet area to reduce stress.

Food and Water

While it rests, you can offer temporary sustenance:

  • Water: Present a shallow, heavy dish of fresh water near the beak. Do not syringe water into their mouth, as it can be inhaled and cause pneumonia.
  • Food: Provide grains like wild bird seed, parakeet seed, dried split peas, or lentils.

Check for a Leg Band

Domestic pigeons or racing homers often wear plastic or metal leg bands.

Those who have found pigeons with the lettering NBRC on their leg bands should contact Gene Giegoldt, NBRC Band Secretary. cpbw56@hotmail.com

Those who have found a bird with personal bands should contact Danny Sturgeon. dannysturgeon@gmail.com Many personalized bands have phone numbers for the owners on the bands.
