2020 NBRC 845 & 846 are a product of the NBRC yearly fundraiser auction of 2015. I really wanted some of the Jay Starley line to blend in with my good Easley family. My friend Ray Lewis said he had seen Adam Hill’s kit and was very impressed. (It takes a bit to impress Ray). Patience I said..then the auction and there were some young birds from Adam Hill..at that time not a “big name” in the roller world..but it was said that Jay was his mentor. Adam put the birds up. I got them for a fair price…but knowing where his breeding stock came from…and I got some Utah-banded birds. I lost all but three to hawks etc…lost a very good hen. After the molt..one cock and two hens were left and I started breeding from them. I called the cock “Cigar” because of his deep mahogany color..thus the “Cigar Line”. They throw cigar-colored, black, lighter red self’s with one white feather in the tail. The white feather in the tail seems to be a trademark of this old line of birds. In an interview with O.D. Harris by William McRae Feb. 28, 1986, talking about Bill Richards birds.McRae: “On the Richards birds what colors did he have?” Harris: “Red checkers, blues Black checkers and RED SELFS WITH WHITE CENTER TAILS….” (Tom Hatcher..The Last of the Greats and Beyond..top of page #95). My great friend Joe Hanson since passed away had one of these what was a barn burner. The cigar is my base cock and I alternate the hens each year with the same results..good to great. Last year I pulled two cocks and two hens from this line to breed this year..the kit box is full of them. I anxiously look forward to October 2021 to see the results after the molt. 845 & 846 are siblings…both showed up on the winner and placement sheet of the Modoc Futurity 2021. I really believe that after many many years I am on to a great family that will work with my management system. My statement about Danny Duran..” a poor manager with a great bird will not do much at all..however, a great manager with a B+ bird will bring heat to the first place winners.” That is what Mr. Duran did with 845 & 846. I do believe they will do great for any loft. I do not sell birds but will donate to auctions etc. Thank you, Danny Duran, Adam Hill, and Jay Starley..your work. I just bred these two birds.
